Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. mid 20th century CE. This is an interesting prosperity doll known as a "Pis Bolong" made of coins held entirely together with cotton twine and the feet, hands, and face are carved from wood with leather ornaments secured to the torso and head. The cash coins are a variety of late Qing and 20th century Chinese and Vietnamese minted brass currency with square central openings, the ideal type to weave together as a solid frame. The leather and wood pieces are painted shimmering golden hues and attached to the coins with twine. These dolls were made to ensure that the body and inner organs of a deceased person would be together in the correct formation when reincarnated, and later they were given as wedding gifts to ensure prosperity and wealth upon the recipients. Size: 14.75" L x 4.5" W (37.5 cm x 11.4 cm)
