Description:

Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Mahakam River, Dayak peoples, Bahau group, ca. 20th century CE. A baby carrier comprised of a cloth-covered wooden frame attached to a half-circle wooden base and an exterior decorated with a panel (aban) beaded with cowrie shells arranged to form two crouching human figures; colorful glass and clay beads as well as buttons adorn the sides of this decorative area in long, hanging strips that you can imagine a baby wanting to play with! The Dayak believed that the souls of young children might wander and come into contact with disease and illness, and so to protect their babies, mothers would say a prayer as they placed them into their distinctive carriers.
