Description:

Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Shirvan region, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful and meticulously detailed rug known as a "Shirvan kilim," woven from dense fibers in a plethora of vibrant chromatic hues, including maroon, tangerine, cream, olive, mocha, forest green, navy, and glaucous. Presenting a rectangular form, the central decorative program is comprised of a large, checkered pattern surrounded by steppe, zigzag, rhomboid, and cruciform motifs. A knotted and frilled fringe in hues of brown and cream additionally adorns the top and bottom peripheries of the massive example. Kilim rugs like this are made via the flat-weaving process and are characterized by slot-like gaps around the geometric motifs. Each rug-manufacturing region of Azerbaijan has its own unique style, and this elaborate patterning is specific to the Shirvan region near the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Size: 53" W x 115" H (134.6 cm x 292.1 cm)

The motifs of Kilim rugs carry symbolic meanings. For example, the continuous zigzags on this rug have traditionally represented the theme of running water, and the cross is a motif that has traditionally been used to ward off the evil eye. In accordance with Anatolian belief, the cross reduces the potency of the evil glance by dividing it into four segments. The origin of this motif predates Christianity. In fact, there are crosses in a wall painting of Catalhoyuk.

#150160

  • Condition: Expected fraying to fringe. Minor fraying and loosening to some interior and peripheral fibers, with light staining and fading to original coloration, and minor creasing. A few large knots in central design appear to be repairs. Otherwise, excellent with impressive preservation of pigments and motifs.
