Description:

Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Shirvan region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful and meticulously detailed rug known as a "Shirvan kilim," woven from dense fibers in hues of cream, cobalt, periwinkle, wheat, citrine, coffee, crimson, teal, and burgundy. The rug features broad rows of white fabric within which elaborate geometric motifs are presented, spacer rows boasting registers of repeating diamonds enclosed within colorful concentric stripes, and frilled fringe along the top and bottom peripheries. Kilim rugs like this are made via the flat-weaving process and are characterized by slot-like gaps around the geometric motifs. Each rug-manufacturing region of Azerbaijan has its own unique style, and this elaborate patterning is specific to the Shirvan region near the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Size: 67.25" W x 122.5" H (170.8 cm x 311.2 cm).
