Description:

North America, United States, ca. 1930s to 1940s CE. A fine mail bag sewn from beige-hued canvas and fitted with a detachable leather strap. Showcasing a rectangular shape, the bag is printed with the words "U.S. MAIL CITY COLLECTION" on one side and lined with leather peripheries and brass buttons. The sturdy rim of the bag features a thick handle on each side and two leather straps with brass buckles for securing closed. A brass lock, known as a postal padlock, is attached to the strap clasp. The intriguing lock displays the word "MAIL" on one side and "RFD" on the other, indicating that it was part of the Rural Free Delivery service, which began in the late 19th century and allowed rural families to receive their mail directly, as they had previously been required to travel considerable distances to post offices or pay private carriers. Size: 25" L x 10.25" W x 15.75" H (63.5 cm x 26 cm x 40 cm)
