Description:

Western Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. An enormous, hand-carved wooden statue of a mother feeding her resting infant. She is seated upon a petite stool atop an integral, barrel-shaped platform, with delineated limbs and pendulous breasts defining her feminine form, and a radiant collar adorning her thick neck. Her head displays somewhat idealized features like almond eyes, a prominent nose, full lips, and cupped ears, characteristic of figural Yoruba sculptures, all below a finely-plaited coiffure and top bun. Colored in a sumptuous dark-brown pigmentation, this is a wonderful depiction of maternalism in Yorubaland! Size: 9" W x 32.5" H (22.9 cm x 82.6 cm).
