Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden nude standing female figure, known as an ere ibeji, that traditionally comes in a pair with its other twin. The figure stands with delineated legs atop an integral discoid plinth and holds both hands to her hips. Her pendulous breasts hang down to her distended abdomen, and her pubis is incised with petite triangular patterns. Her enlarged head features bulging eyes studded with metal pupils, full lips and nose, cicatrices on her cheeks, backswept ears, and a tall, multi-lobed coiffure adorned with thick indigo-hued pigment.   • Condition: Minor abrasions and nicks to base, body, limbs, and head, with several stable fissures as a result of aging, softening to some finer features, and some fading and darkening to areas of indigo pigment in coiffure, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina and smooth surfaces as well as nice preservation to pigment in coiffure.
