Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An intriguing necklace composed of 44 interlocking snake vertebrae and 10 yellow glass barrel beads that are strung together with lengths of twisted rattan fiber that are knotted in the middle. The ends and peripheries of each vertebrae fit snugly into those of its neighboring vertebrae, and smooth brown patina has formed across each bone. The yellow beads decorate the area surrounding the rattan knot. Snake vertebrae necklaces like this example are worn by shamans and babalawo (diviners) during special ceremonies of significance as the serpent bones are thought to increase the potency of the babalawo's magic. Size: 23" L x 0.625" W (58.4 cm x 1.6 cm)
