Description:

**Originally Listed At $600**

West Africa, Ghana, Akan, Asante or Fante tribes, ca. 20th century CE. An endearing maternal wooden sculpture depicting the Queen-Mother, sitting upon a separately-carved throne as she nurses her child. Known as an Esi-Mansa, Queen-Mother maternity figures are kept in royal or commoner shrines where it emphasizes the importance of family and ancestral lineage traditions. The female sits upright, wearing only sandals and a pair of beaded belts, as she holds her breast to the infant's suckling mouth, highlighting her role as nurturer within the family. Areas of ceremonial scarification adorn her body, as black pigment delineates her facial features and her mushroom-shaped coiffure. The Akan people are a matrilineal society, thus a woman's essential role was to bear children, primarily daughters who would continue the matrilineage. Size: 6.5" W x 19.8" H (16.5 cm x 50.3 cm)
