Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a well-aged example of a traditional cane wood Ogoni dance mask, with the narrowed eyes, exaggerated nose, and articulated jaw which opens to reveal reed peg teeth. Masks like this are used as part of ritual performances for funerals and for when yams (the main crop) were planted and harvested. A white mask like this one is an "elu", a spirit, mask. Size: 5" W x 7.9" H (12.7 cm x 20.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
