Description:

**First Time At Auction**

South Africa, Limpopo and Mpumalanga region, Ndebele people, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful hand-beaded leather hide known as a jocolo or bride apron, with 5 petal shaped panels along the lower edge and an attached band of open work beading. The entire surface is covered with thousands of lane stitched beads in white with blue, red, yellow, green, orange, black, and pink accents in squares and triangular shapes - the central horizontal blue and yellow bars with vertical sides represent a house. The upper edge is bare and folded over, the hem secured with additional beading. The Ndebele are known for their exquisite beadwork that they adorned themselves in. The five panels on the lower section indicate this was worn by a bride on her wedding day, but men and children also wear similar beaded loincloths. Size: 23" L x 20" W (58.4 cm x 50.8 cm)
