Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kanyok or Luba peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-built brownware pottery jar of a sizable form with a flat base, a spherical body with a sloped shoulder, a conical neck, and an abstract anthropomorphic head that doubles as the spout. The lower body is highly corrugated with hundreds of petite notches, and the shoulder and neck base exhibit flowing ovoid, stippled, and circular motifs. The spout head features slit-form eyes, a bulbous nose and chin, and tab-shaped ears beneath a crested coiffure. Size: 11.1" W x 16.5" H (28.2 cm x 41.9 cm).
