Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely carved wooden upper section of a headdress from the Igbo culture, probably representative of an ancestor. The item has a conical base with two lateral perforations and a concave underside, a three-ring neckpiece, and an elongated neck with incised linear and triangular motifs. The head is painted white with slit-shaped eyes, a broad forehead, full lips, and a large nose, with semicircular ears and clear scarification lines underneath each eye. The top of the head is detailed with a sloping coiffure, with light-brown patina and an incised linear motif. A stunning example! Size: 13" H (33 cm).
