Description:

Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask with an expressive countenance comprised of large, openwork round eyes, arched brows, a protruding upturned nose, an oversized forehead, cross-hatched coiffure elements on either side, and an articulated jaw revealing inserted teeth. In addition a raffia 'beard' is attached to the chin and perforations along the periphery for further ornamentation or attachment to costume. Wood base. Size: 14.125" H (35.9 cm); 17.125" H (43.5 cm) on included custom stand.
