Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio / Anaang people, ca. early 20th century CE. A charming standing wooden figure of a woman. She has twin spiralized plaits that hang down from her large and pronounced head, with a classic Ibibio-style carved face. Her clothing is interesting, with a large necklace above a brown-painted torso. Her breasts and navel are notable, and her hands pressed to her stomach may indicate pregnancy. She stands on thick red legs, and has integral brown-hued heeled shoes. Probably a shrine or ceremonial figure, this is a lovely example from Western Africa! Size: 21.375" H (54.3 cm).

Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970
