Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Hemba peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden headrest with an intriguing Janiform head. Below the pair of faces is a ringed neck and a rectangular plinth, and above the tapered brow is a squat stem and a slightly convex base to lay one's head. The faces emanating from the midsection bear strong features, with one being male and the other female. Smooth layers of brown patina envelop the carving. Size: 6" W x 7.2" H (15.2 cm x 18.3 cm)
