Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kasai region, Hemba / Luba culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An elegant ritual dance rattle with three dried matamba fruit husks containing seeds. The figure finial is a female ancestor figure, with a bulging abdomen and stylized visage, standing atop a rod. The three matamba pods are bored through then threaded on the rod, the loose seeds rattling inside. Size: 11" L x 2" W (27.9 cm x 5.1 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
