Description:

West Africa, Togo and Ghana, Ga-Adangbe people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating pair of hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figures, one male, one female. Both are colored with a greyish, thin pigment over their pale wood surfaces. The male has an elongated head with bulging, round eyes, while the female has a rounded head with incised, triangular eyes. Who is this mysterious pair? In this culture, the dead are venerated, believed to live in the next world and much more powerful than the living, with the ability to influence the lives of their relatives. These two may be representations of ancestors. Size of largest: 3" W x 15" H (7.6 cm x 38.1 cm); 15.45" H (39.2 cm) on included custom stand.
