Description:

West Africa, Mali, Bandiagara region, Dogon peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A finely carved wooden window shutter or small door used on houses or storage facilities such as granaries. The panel is a single piece with a pair of protruding knobs on one side as hinges. The front is low relief carved with a simple crocodile motif which represents "ayo geu," a mythical black crocodile. Great patina and weathering to the surface from years of use and exposure to the elements! Size: 15.5" L x 1" W x 27.75" H (39.4 cm x 2.5 cm x 70.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
