Description:

Africa, South Sudan, Dinka Peoples, ca. first half of 20th century CE. A lovely, hand-carved wood headrest in the form of an abstract, crescent-like form with dozens of circular brass and copper alloy inlays throughout. Boasting a light brown woodgrain surface beneath a lustrous burnish, this fine example displays a distinct "saddle" head support sitting upon 2 sturdy legs; one thick and flared and the other slender and slanted. A rectangular handle protrudes from one end, while a pointed grip protrudes from the other. The periphery of the headrest is adorned with a deeply incised, zigzag border. Silvery dots of brass also outline the form of the example, as a 4-pointed star of gold-hued copper alloy inlays is showcased at the center. The underside of the piece boasts a carefully carved row of triangles on both sides. Size: 14.8" L x 5.6" W x 8.3" H (37.6 cm x 14.2 cm x 21.1 cm)

The finesse of the presentation as well as the inlays signify a great symbolic value and suggest that this headrest may have belonged to a highly important individual in Dinka society. Head supports like this example were also commonly used as seats.
