West Africa, Nigeria, Edo, Court of Benin, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A cast-bronze face mask meant to hang and display within one's home. The ovoid vizard exhibits generously lidded eyes, a slender nose with flared nostrils, full lips flanked by rounded cheeks, and a tapered chin, all beneath a domed helmet that rests low on the forehead. The center of the helmet is adorned with a petite crucifix, and both the helmet and the mandible are framed within semicircular borders. An integral suspension loop projects up from the top. Lustrous patina envelops the surfaces of this decorative countenance! Size: 5.4" W x 9.125" H (13.7 cm x 23.2 cm)
