West Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand carved wooden statue of a nun at prayer or the Virgin Mary, with distinctive facial features, especially the eyes, that are Baule in style. The pillar-like figure stands upon an integral pedestal base, incised to look like stone, her feet bare, a robe and veil cascade to her ankles, and a rosary necklace and crucifix are carved into her right arm. Size: 4" L x 3.5" W x 17.75" H (10.2 cm x 8.9 cm x 45.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
