West Africa, Cameroon, Bamana/Bamilike peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A wooden mask in the form of an antelope, with a simple face ending in a pointed nose and mouth, thin slits for eyes, and two huge horns that project from the forehead and are partially articulated. Antelope imagery in Bamana lore is associated with the introduction of agriculture, the male form, and the sun that gives life. This example has been painted a dark black/brown color using a soil-based pigment. Comes with custom stand. Size: 6.4" W x 21.2" H (16.3 cm x 53.8 cm); height on stand: 23.15" (58.8 cm)
