Description:

West Africa, Ghana, Akan peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A pottery head depicting an abstract female with a cylindrical neck and a ringed base. The spherical head boasts coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a petite nose, full lips, cupped ears, and a smooth brow, all beneath a coiffure composed of several corkscrew hair nodules. Layers of grey mud on the surface give the head a smooth texture, though much has chipped away to reveal the underlying buffware color. Terracotta heads like this are meant to represent stylized funerary portraits in memoriam to the deceased. Size: 5.25" W x 7.375" H (13.3 cm x 18.7 cm).
