Lot 35
**First Time At Auction**
Central Asia, Afghanistan or Pakistan, Kuchi (Kochi) peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a stunning necklace and pendant crafted from brass then inlaid with semi-precious lapis stones and glass beading. The double strands are strung in modern times on a wire with a hook loop closure - one strand is entirely lapis, alternating between rounded and seed beads, and the other is a combination of petite brass disc and lapis seed beads. The elaborate pendant is a hand-made talisman; a rectangular panel with 2 suspension loops welded to the top, and a 10 dangling chain links with embossed faces, hammered medallions of stars within a scalloped crescents and diamonds, that tinkle lightly as they brush each other. The face is inlaid with 5 large ovoid lapis stones, dozens of glass sequins, and glass beads in red, blue, green, and black. This is a wearable necklace that is quite striking and bold! Size of pendant: 5.75" L x 3.65" W (14.6 cm x 9.3 cm); strand: 21" L (53.3 cm)
According to Richard Tapper's article, "Who are the Kuchi? Nomad self-identities in Afghanistan" published in the Journal of Royal Anthropological Institute, "'Kuchi', an Afghan Persian word meaning 'those who go on migrations', is the common generic term, used by both Afghans and foreigners, for the nomads of Afghanistan, as it has been for many decades. Most if not all the nomads, and indeed many long-settled former nomads, now acknowledge this name, yet in the 1960s and 1970s few of those so labelled used the term for themselves."
