Description:

Oceania, Northern Australia, Tiwi Islands, Aboriginal peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine ceremonial spear from the Tiwi Islands with a multi-pronged spearhead atop a conical base which is integral with the slender, elongated handle, and deep red pigment envelops the entire weapon. Applied rings of white, yellow, and black pigment decorate the bottom of the handle, and the spearhead is elaborately presented with linear and lattice-pattern motifs in similar hues. Spears like this example were indeed used for ceremonial rituals and celebrations, though they were used in more utilitarian practices as well such as hunting and fishing. Size: 2.125" W x 52.125" H (5.4 cm x 132.4 cm).
