Description:

Mithili Wanambi (Australia - Northeast Arnhem Land, ca. 1923 to 1981 CE), ca. mid 20th century CE. Painted on eucalyptus bark using natural pigments to form a fantastical fish, a wonderful painting telling the myth of Gopu, the fish created at Garrkarrnga (Port Bradshaw) by the Gumatjmala spirit man. This fish was given to three clans as a totem - the Gumatj, the Makar-wanamirri, and the Warramiri. The background of cross-hatched lines represents the saltwater of Garrkarrnga. Mithili Wanambi was an important artist and community leader of the Marrakulu until his death in 1981; his daughter Boliny Wanambi and son Wukun Wanambi are important artists in their own rights today. Size: 9.2" W x 27" H (23.4 cm x 68.6 cm)
