Description:

Latin America, Guatemala, ca. 1900 to 1920 CE. A large carved and painted wooden figure representing San Simon-Maximon, an under-recognized Spanish saint, depicted bearded and mustachioed, his joints articulated at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. According to tradition, he is always provided with a chair; this example is finished in a smoky blue and serves as a stand as well. The figure would have been clothed and included as part of a curandero altar, most likely a relatively large altar given his size. One detail that may not come across in photos, there is a cigar butt lodged inside the gentleman's mouth. The cigar served as a bribe offered to the saint to persuade him to help a petitioner. Size: articulated man measures 45" x 13"; chair measures 29"H x 16-1/2"W x 14-1/2"D
