Description:

Mac Pakula (American, 1923 to 2013). "Jeremiah 'Liver Eatin' Johnson" copper sculpture, 2006. Edition 2/30, title, artist's stamp, and signature on integral base. A striking limited-edition sculpture of Jeremiah "Liver Eatin" Johnson by artist Mac Pakula, signed and titled with a copyright symbol and marked "2/30." The beautiful sculpture shows the legendary mountain man wearing animal hide as he holds the muzzle of his rifle, which is propped up perpendicularly, and places his left foot on a rock. A native New Jerseyan, Johnson served in the Mexican American War, but deserted after striking an officer. He then traveled west to try his hand at gold digging in Alder Gulch, Montana Territory. A famous legend states that his wife was killed by a Crow brave after which he embarked on a vendetta against the tribe. He is said to have killed, scalped, and devoured the livers of more than 300 Crow tribe members, hence his nickname. After 25 years and scores of slain Crow warriors, he ended his vendetta against the tribe and thus began to consider the Crow his brothers. Size: 7.5" W x 13.125" H (19 cm x 33.3 cm); 14.125" H (35.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Mac L. Pakula was a cartoonist and sculptor who illustrated for both Atlas and Marvel Comics in the 1950s.
