Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo tribe, ca. 1950s CE. A fine pair of wearable collar necklaces of similar lengths. The first is made from 31 turquoise stones that are lightly polished and retain much of their natural pitting with dark mineral deposits in crevices. The ends are strung with nickel-brass beads in tubular and spherical shapes and terminate with a hook clasp. The other necklace is strung with over a hundred brown, black, and white discoid shell beads known as heishi with three turquoise and three silver disc beads interspersed along the strand. The largest beads are placed at the center and then gradually taper towards conical silver terminals with a hook clasp. These necklaces are wearable and would be complimentary when worn together or on their own. Size of heishi bead necklace: 15.5" L (39.4 cm); largest bead: .3" diameter (0.8 cm); quality of silver: 95%; turquoise necklace: 16.25" L (41.3 cm); largest bead: .5" W (1.3 cm)
