Native American, United States, Southeastern Arizona, Tonto Basin, Upper Gila River region, Salado culture, ca. 1275 to 1450 CE; Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua Paquime/Casas Grandes, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A pair of lovely ancient hand-built pottery vessels from the American southwest into northern Mexico. One is a Gila type of redware vessel with a simple but elegant carinated body and wide neck with an out-rolled rim. The exterior surface is incredibly smooth and burnished with a red slip, contrasting against the black slipped interior. The other is a Ramos type blackware vessel of a carinated form, but with a rounded shoulder with twin loop handles joining rim to shoulder. The surface is also highly burnished with a black slip throughout. Size: 8.12" Diameter x 6.75" H (20.6 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private Denver collection, USA, by inheritance before 2000 from the Harry Tammen Family collection, former owner of the Denver Post

  • Condition: Two small areas of restoration to rim on redware vessel, remains of plant roots and earthen deposits inside. Blackware vessel is intact and very good. Find site labels on the bases of both.
