Description:

Native American, Western / Southwestern United States, ca. mid-20th to 21st century CE. A pair of gourd and wood rattles. The beaded rattle has an ebony wood handle, net beading, leather tassels, and horsehair tufts. This is a contemporary example that is often used by members of the Native American Church for Peyote rituals. The larger gourd has a nice patina to the handle from touch, possibly made by the Yavapai people. Size of peyote rattle: 15" L x 2.5" W (38.1 cm x 6.4 cm); tassel adds 13" (33 cm)

  • Condition: Larger rattle has encrusted mineral deposits on the gourd and nice patina to the wood. The peyote rattle gourd is repaired with piece reattached and faint break line. Overall both are in good condition and function as rattles.
