Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A set of 2 hand-built pottery vessels - a bowl and a jar - from ancient Colombia. First is a jar of squat, carinated form with a thick rim, a pair of abstract zoomorphic handles, and negative resist motifs in black and red pigment. The larger vessel is a footed bowl with thick walls, highly burnished surfaces, and dense negative resist motifs - including a five-pointed star - within the basin. Size (bowl): 3.5" W x 7.75" H (8.9 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

  • Condition: Both vessels have minor abrasions, fading to pigment commensurate with age, and small nicks, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of pigment and good earthen deposits. Jar has old inventory label beneath base.
