Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Moche culture, ca. 200 to 800 CE; Chimu, ca. 900 to 1300 CE. A lovely trio of pottery vessels from ancient Per: a Chimu blackware stirrup vessel and 2 Moche figural vessels. First, the blackware jar presents a globular body surmounted by the deity Ai Apec in the form of a crab. Similarly, larger Moche vessel is also a stirrup though is in the form of a seated polychrome figure. The last and most petite vessel displays a seated female with closed eyes wearing a long veil as a flared spout rises from the top of her head. Size of largest (Chimu blackware): 5" W x 8.8" H (12.7 cm x 22.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: Both stirrup vessels have been professionally repaired with restoration and repainting over break lines on Chimu vessel and visible break lines with loss of spout to Moche. More petite Moche jar has losses to feet and chipping to nose and rim. All have excepted nicks and abrasions as shown. Liberal remaining detail and light earthen deposits throughout.
