Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche or Vicus culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A pretty and intimidating pair of copper mace heads cast via the lost wax technique. The larger is a disc shape with a broad central opening for hafting on a handle. One face is etched with linear crosshatching, and thick notches encircle the perimeter, creating a deadly edge. The other mace is a spiked star with five arms projecting from the thick central socket. These two mace heads could be mounted on handles and carried as ritualistic pieces that would inspire respect, but they could also inflict maximum damage if needed! Size (disc): 4.125" Diameter x 0.2" W (10.5 cm x 0.5 cm); (star): 3.375" Diameter x 1.375" W (8.6 cm x 3.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Drimmer collection, Florida, USA, before 1965

  • Condition: Chips to tips of star spikes and on rim of hafting hole, otherwise intact. Disc mace has heavier encrustations and deposits that obscure some of the etched motifs. Nicks and a few chips to peripheries but intact. Rich green patina on both.
