Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan area, ca. 1350 to 1521 CE. A nice set of 2 hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessels featuring intricate negative resist motifs in black and red hues atop the beige ground. The first vessel bears tall walls, a gently flared rim, and a deep basin, all atop a trio of hollow, nubbin legs that perhaps contained petite rattle balls at one time. Concentric bands of frets, spots, or zigzagging stripes decorate the basin interior and the top of the exterior. The shallow bowl has a round but stable base and thin walls, with intricate zigzags and oscillations along the walls as well as concentric squares and petite spots in the basin center. Size (tripod vessel): 7.5" W x 3.625" H (19 cm x 9.2 cm); (bowl): 8.75" W x 2.25" H (22.2 cm x 5.7 cm)
