Latin America, Mexico, Oaxaca, ca. mid-20th century CE. A pair of vibrant wooden animal carvings attributed to Manuel Jimenez Ramirez (Mexican, 1919-2005). The limbs and ears are attached with nails - one with a long tail like a fox, and the other is tailless with a spotted blue coat. Manuel Jimenez Ramirez was a 20th century artist credited with originating the Oaxacan version of alebrijes. Alebrijes are in essence animal figures hand-carved from wood and then hand-painted with lively patterns in contrasting bold hues. Jimenez creations are held in important private collections and museums throughout the world. Size of orange animal: 13" L x 2.5" W x 5.5" H (33 cm x 6.4 cm x 14 cm)
