Description:

Pre-Columbian, Jaina / Campeche Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 850 CE. A fascinating pair of mold-made terracotta figures that may have functioned as instruments. The first is a hollow warrior or chieftain figure, his arms held to his sides, a loin cloth and necklace are his only clothing. His visage consists of slightly raised eyelids, protruding nose, and downturned lips. The thick liner and spiral markings on his face are indicators of ritualistic scarification or tattoos. His elbows, base, ears, head, and verso are drilled into his hollow body for use as a flute. The other figure was once a rattle, slipped in a white pigment and has a rotund and nodule covered body- the arms outstretched, and a triangular headdress of panel rise from the shoulder and verso of head. The face has a gaping open mouth, deep impressed eye sockets and spherical adornments on the brow. The verso is pierced with a vent hole that also may have amplified the rattling sound of a pebble inside the figure. Size of white figure: 3.75" L x 1.5" W x 5" H (9.5 cm x 3.8 cm x 12.7 cm)
