Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo to Meiji period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful pair of massive porcelain platters known as Imari ware, with characteristically bright colors and stylized images. The dishes have shallow basins and a central tondo of a planter with flowering chrysanthemums. The rims feature scenes that reflect an idealized version of earlier Japanese culture, the focus of much Imari imagery. Repeated scenes of a pond with a fish creature and a pair of pheasant birds wrap around the wide rim. The verso of the dish has simple scrolling blue foliate patterns around the ring foot. The colors on the basin are primarily red and blue on a white ground, with green and gold details. This vibrant pair wonderfully exemplify Imari ware. Size: 22.25" Diameter x 3" H (56.5 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Evergreen, Colorado, collection, USA; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA, collection; acquired 1960 to 2000
