Description:

Kate Breakey (Australian, b. 1957). Two Still Lifes: Pears & Figs. Hand-colored gelatin silver print, 1998 & 2003. Printer's proof. Both hand-signed with "P.P." and Segura Publishing blind stamp beneath image. Published by Segura Publishing Company, Tempe, Arizona. A lovely pair of printer's proof color lithographs of still lifes, one of three pears and the other of four figs, by Australian artist Kate Breakey. Concerned with the themes of death in nature and the preservation of beauty through photography, Breakey seeks to "tenderly record the beautiful bodies now in transition towards decomposition and disintegration." Describing her process, she states: "I begin with a photograph - a highly convincing illusion, a map of reality, a piece of evidence rendered in silver-grey tones. This I smear and coat with oil paint in many transparent layers - the layers of emotional subjectivity - lies, dreams, delusions, exaggerations and embellishments..." Size of image: 12" W x 9.25" H (30.5 cm x 23.5 cm); of paper: 18" W x 16.5" H (45.7 cm x 41.9 cm)

".... If I am lucky the media combine, become enmeshed and inseparable, a curious marriage of what might be real and what is imagined or desired. They now collude to play with my perceptions about what truth is, my favourite game. I am a sensualist. I admit to my seduction by texture, colour, light and form. It is my deepest pleasure, my lovely addiction."

About the artist: "Kate Breakey is internationally known for her large-scale, richly hand-colored photographs including her acclaimed series of luminous portraits of birds, flowers and animals in a series called Small Deaths published in 2001 by University of Texas Press. Her other monographs include, Painted Light, University of Texas in 2010, a career retrospective that encompasses a quarter century of prolific image making.

Her collection of photograms, entitled 'Las Sombras / The shadows' was published by University of Texas Press in October 2012. This series is a continuation of her lifetime investigation of the natural world which in her own words is ?brimming with fantastic mysterious beautiful things.'

Since 1980 her work has appeared in more than 110 one-person exhibitions and in over 60 group exhibitions . A native of South Australia, Kate moved to Austin, Texas in 1988. She completed a Master of Fine Art degree at the University of Texas in 1991 where she also taught photography in the Department of Art and Art History until 1997. Her collections include the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, The Australian National Gallery and the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, as well as various private collections.
