Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine group of 2 hand-built and highly burnished pottery figures from ancient West Mexico. The first figure presents seated or kneeling atop thick thighs and holds her infant with her left arm close to her breast. Her elongated head features coffee bean-shaped eyes, a prominent nose above a pointed chin, large earspools set near her cheeks, and a twisted cord around her narrow brow. The larger figure stands atop arched feet and delineated legs and holds her child's head close to her cheek. She has bands of white across her lower body and arms, raised scarification pellets on each shoulder, and an incised headband wrapped around her tall forehead. Size (standing): 3.75" W x 7.4" H (9.5 cm x 18.8 cm); (seated): 3.1" W x 4.25" H (7.9 cm x 10.8 cm)

  • Condition: Seated figure has small chip and evidence of previous repair on back-right corner of head; standing figure is intact and very good. Both figures have minor abrasions, fading to pigment, light encrustations, and a couple of petite spalls. Nice remains of pigment throughout.
