Description:

Central Europe, Late Pleistocene, ca. 15,000 to 10,000 years ago. Two pieces of Ice Age history: a right and left partial maxillae from an extinct late aurochs (Bos primigenius), complete with original molars. Recovered from deep within the Late Pleistocene gravel beds of Central Europe, these fossils were unearthed alongside relics of Woolly Rhinoceros, Woolly Mammoth, Megaloceros, Bison, and other ancient Ice Age creatures, by a river dredge. Aurochs, a wild cattle species, were known for their broad horns and robust stature. Preserved in their natural hues from sediment and age, these are perfect for display as-is, these maxillae also hold invaluable potential as essential components in the meticulous reconstruction of a complete skull. Size of largest: 6" L (15.2 cm)

The Aurochs (Bos primigenius) were large, wild cattle species that roamed across Europe, Asia, and North Africa until their final extinction in the 17th century. Standing taller and broader than modern domestic cattle, Aurochs played a crucial role in human history as both a formidable game animal and a symbol of strength and vitality. They were central to early human societies as a vital source of meat, leather, and bones for tools, and their domestication around 10,000 years ago marked a pivotal moment in the development of agriculture and civilization. Aurochs were also culturally significant, appearing in ancient cave art and folklore across various cultures, symbolizing power, fertility, and the untamed wilderness
