Description:

Ancient Greece, Cyprus, Cypro-Geometric III, ca. 850 to 750 BCE; Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. An attractive pair of pottery vessels: an Apulian olpe and a Cypro-Geometric kylix. Enveloped in a lustrous black glaze with areas of shimmering iridescence, the olpe presents a discoid foot, a bulbous body, a rounded shoulder, a narrow neck, and a flared rim that connects to the shoulder via a ribbon-form handle. Alternatively, the kylix displays a conical, pedestal foot supporting a cylindrical body with a broad rim, all flanked by a pair of upwards-arching handles. Black-painted decoration adorns the bare terracotta surface with a swastika pattern, several horizontal bands, and vertical striations on the exterior, while the interior features a target motif basin and rim, as well as red-painted walls. Size of larger (olpe): 4.3" Diameter x 3.9" H (10.9 cm x 9.9 cm)
