Description:

Europe, ca. 14th to 16th century. A remarkably well preserved pair of framed double-sided vellum illuminated manuscript pages from a religious text inscribed with 16 lines of Gothic Latin script in hues of gold and red. The first letter of each sentence is enlarged and embellished with a decorative square of blue and pink filled with a lovely geometric motif. A beautiful rectangle ornament of blue, pink, and gold adorns the end of each sentence that finishes before the margin. This page probably comes from a Book of Hours, a prayer book used by wealthy laypeople; or a Breviary for the clergy, the Divine Office; both included Psalms, hymns, and various prayers recited at specific hours of the day. Size: 8" W x 9.375" H (20.3 cm x 23.8 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000

  • Condition: Custom frames are modern but complement the manuscript pages nicely. Pages have not been examined outside the frame, but appear to have some very light wrinkling. Otherwise, they appear to be intact and excellent.
