Description:

North America, Eastern United States, New York, Silurian period, ca. 443.8 to 419.2 million years ago. A stone matrix with the fossilized remains of two arthropods, Eurypterus remipes, showcasing both a partial and a full body view. Commonly known as 'sea scorpions,' the partial fossil includes the head and front paddle legs, while the other displays the entire body, with the telson tail slightly overhanging the edge of the stone. Eurypterus had a head with a plate-like carapace and two bean-shaped eyes on the top. From the head, tiny appendages for eating and larger limbs shaped like paddles for swimming can be seen. The segmented abdomen tapers to a needle-like tip known as the telson, which was used for swimming rather than stinging. These extinct creatures are related to today's horseshoe crabs and prehistoric trilobites, and are New York's designated state fossil! Size of stone matrix: 5.25" L x 2" W x 4.65" H (13.3 cm x 5.1 cm x 11.8 cm); : 3.5" L x 1.75" W (8.9 cm x 4.4 cm)
