Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Robert Parrott (American XX-XXI). Ceramic vase with landscape scene, n.d. Paul Eshelman (American, XX-XXI). Corrugated ceramic bowl, n.d. Both signed underfoot. A lovely pair of pottery vessels by two impressive contemporary potters. The first is an elegant vase by Robert Parrott. The vessel presents a tall ovoid body rising to a cylindrical neck that flares to a broad mouth and is embellished in Parrott's signature abstract landscape featuring a rising or setting sun hovering at the horizon line in addition to stylized imagery of the sea, earth, and sky. Paired with this is a Paul Eshelman corrugated bowl of a generous size, the interior of its the red clay body enveloped with a gorgeous periwinkle glaze, creating his signature contrast between glazed and unglazed surfaces. Simple yet elegant! Size (Parrott vase): 4.75" L x 8.75" W x 16.75" H (12.1 cm x 22.2 cm x 42.5 cm) Size (Eshelman bowl): 11.25" L x 14.25" W x 3" H (28.6 cm x 36.2 cm x 7.6 cm)

Robert Parrott Artist Statement: "As a potter working alone in my studio since 1971, I continue to take daily pleasure in creating functional pottery. Each piece is carefully designed for a lifetime of use. My work is formed on the potter’s wheel, with hand rolled slabs or by extruding hollow and solid forms. The signature landscape pattern in blue or white glaze has endured throughout my career and happily seems to continue to please the public. All wares are food safe, non- toxic and safe in dishwasher, oven and microwave. Inspiration comes from the traditional stoneware pottery of the USA, England and Japan. My goal is to create contemporary innovations within an age old tradition. I enjoy the daily work of maintaining a production studio, wearing all the hats from clay mixing to loading and firing, packing and shipping, bookkeeping and of course, making the pots. All the jobs, including scrubbing the floor, are part of the life of the potter. University of New Hampshire // US Army" (Griffith and Parrott Pottery website)

Paul and Laurel Eshelman Artist Statement: "The clay vessels of Eshelman Pottery order and dignify human life. Clarity is given to simple forms by contrasting glazed and unglazed surfaces. Pure clean glazes render elegant presentation of food and drink. Paul's developing artistic interests were directed along practical lines as he grew up in Iowa. He received a B.A. in art from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington and an M.F.A. in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. Laurel received a B.S. in biology from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Since 1988 Paul and Laurel have been living and making pottery in Elizabeth, a small farming community in northwestern Illinois. They have three children who all worked in the pottery during their years at home. The clay body is a red stoneware; the glazes are all lead free. The wares may be safely used in the microwave and dishwasher as well as the conventional oven if the oven is not preheated. (Casseroles may be used in a preheated oven.) The pieces should provide many years of service."
