Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A fantastic pair of mold-made pottery boar effigies standing on fused legs with heads facing forward and slightly down. The tusks protrude from the sides, the lips pushed slightly upward, and their downturned floppy ears are set just above squinty impressed eyes. The undersides of the rotund stomachs are open and hollow, to reduce the risk of shattering when fired, and there are faint remains of red pigment on the mouth, indicating these were once brightly painted. Boars and pigs of the suidae family have long played an important role in Chinese culture, symbolizing happiness and good fortune. Miniatures of symbolic and domesticated farm animals were incorporated into burial to accompany the deceased to the afterlife, recreating their daily life and providing sustenance. Size: 5.5" L x 2" W x 3.5" H (14 cm x 5.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
