Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, Canaanite, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 2000 to 1600 BCE. A remarkable pair of Canaanite bronze figures: a figural buckle or fibula and a statuette of a bull and rider. First, a wonderful example of utilitarian art; the buckle presents as a male in a conical hat, likely intended as Baal or the smiting god, with a rectangular body flanked by a pair of coiled suspension loops. Alternatively, the bull and rider likely served as a toy or votive rather than an object of daily use and presents in a stylized form of a male rider with a large head, pointed hat, and short limbs atop a partially seated bull with a long snout and prominent horns. Size of buckle: 1.3" W x 1.4" H (3.3 cm x 3.6 cm); 1.8" H (4.6 cm) on included custom stand.
