Ancient East Asia, Northeast China, Hongshan culture, Neolithic Period, ca. 3800 to 2700 BCE; Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 5th to 7th century CE. An intriguing pair of ancient, stylized faces from opposite sides of the globe: a stone head from Hongshan culture and a pottery visage from Veracruz. Larger of the 2, the Chinese stone face presents an ovoid form with bulging eyes beneath arched brows, a triangular nose, and parted lips. Alternatively, the Mexican pottery head displays heavy-lidded eyes, a sharp nose, and fleshy lips exposing a row of teeth. Size of larger (Chinese stone): 2.1" W x 3" H (5.3 cm x 7.6 cm)

  • Condition: Mexican pottery is likely a fragment of a larger piece. Chipping to verso of Chinese stone and periphery of Mexican pottery and expected nicks and abrasions to both. Otherwise, Chinese stone is intact, and both have liberal remaining detail and clear forms.
