Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A dazzling pair of silvered brass repousse panels, each hammered with the central image of a bearded Jupiter - Greek Zeus - the Roman god of the sky and thunder, who rules as king of the gods. The larger panel displays additional gods in the form of 2 busts and 2 standing figures on either side of the king, accompanied by a pair of eagles - the traditional symbol of Jupiter. Alternatively, the more petite panel shows Jupiter's muscular chest draped in a toga as an eagle perches on one shoulder and lightening bold peaks out from behind the other shoulder. An eagle, 2 standing deities and bunches of grapes adorn the area to his left. Size of larger: 5.4" L x 2" W (13.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

  • Condition: More petite is missing left side and has some chipping to peripheries. Both have tearing with losses to top and bottom peripheries of center, as well as light bending, but form and imagery are still clear. Otherwise, both are in good condition with nice remaining detail and areas of light patina.
